e have two choices as a people: Walk through life blindly, knocking over every barrier for our own self indulgence, or walk a careful path, using only what we need and preserving some fabric for future generations to weave their own lives. People who choose the latter are considered environmentally conscience. They’re the saviors of earth; not because they want to be remembered, but because they want others to have a chance. The former are a blend of uncaring and uninformed individuals whom need to be swayed and brought to the light before we reach the point of no return. And as time marches on, that inevitable point is right over the horizon.

Put the need to reverse Global Warming aside for a moment and peer at our troubles through a different lens. Even if the planet wasn’t in danger of heating up even more; regardless of the erosion of coastlines, mass extinction of species, and the severe and sporadic weather patterns to ensue -- we still, as a people, need to implement sustainable living. To put it simply, sustainability means to live in a way that preserves the social, ecological and economic way of life. The hording of nonrenewable natural resources and the pollution of our sky and waters are killing the entire trifecta.

Humans are confronted head on by the challenge of sustainability. The challenge presented begs humans to change the ways in which we produce and consume energy, nutrients, materials, food, water, buildings, and textiles, and so on it goes through countless other one-word dangers. Implementing any project that explores and attempts to correct how we create and consume as humans will be infinitely more relevant and beneficial to our survival than a lack of action. Taking no action whatsoever is the damning sin that will stain our entire existence.

People need to reassess what is valuable and what is excess and learn what is meaningful. A framework needs to be in place for the average people of the world to begin to recognize how to become sustainable. In order to live a sustainable life, we have to become a sustainable culture, not the other way around. The individual cannot raise the village. It’s time for the world to start taking drastic measures for these drastic times.

Many ideas are already in place for various sustainability projects. This issue isn’t prevalent enough in today’s media culture. But this doesn’t mean that people have an excuse not to do their part. You can easily organize groups and identify what your community can do to help lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Make people aware of issues like building re-design, cities harmful pollutants, and the dangers of the current public transportation model. A community group could easily change the way an entire town, city, or county uses energy and pollutes the environment. Strides can be taken to ensure the economy remains sustainable during a period of change.

Other things like eco-tourism can have a strong impact on society and the environment. The problem is identified, the solutions are in place. All that’s left is the taking of action.
